No BOE tax increase this year; in the coming years not sure

The Turner County School Board’s budget does not include a tax increase this year.

However, future revenue projections are less certain due to changes in state law regarding homestead property tax values, said Superintendent Christy Wray.

A new state law establishes a statewide cap on increases for property value increases on homestead properties.

This is a reaction to a statewide homestead property tax value vote some time back. Georgia voters approved value cap, which also allowed local taxing authorities to opt out of the cap.

The Turner County Board of Education elected to opt out of the program, which would have allowed homestead property values to increase without limit.

The new law makes this cap mandatory for counties that approved the referendum.  Ms. Wray said making the cap mangdatory will eventually impact local school system revenues.

“This will put us in a position where we will be capped out, and potentially lose revenue,” said Superintendent Christy Wray.
