Running radar on Interstate stopped briefly

The Turner County Sheriff’s Department radar permit was pulled for 30 days last week.

Sheriff Andy Hester said an appeal is set for Tuesday. If the appeal fails, the permit comes back at the end of 30 days.

The state says the Sheriff’s Office was over the 35% rule in 2023. The 35% rule says fines from speeding tickets cannot be more than 35% of an agency’s operating budget. Super speeder tickets do not apply to this rule.

“They said we were over in 2023, after the District Attorney’s office took over prosecutions and cleaned up the backlog,” Sheriff Hester said.

Meantime, the deputies are still on duty on the Interstate.
